In a previous post, we touched briefly on what schema is.  Today, we’re delving into schema warnings and errors: What they are, when you need to care and why it probably isn’t the emergency you are thinking it is.  First, I need to let you in on a secret. I’m not a developer. I’m not an engineer. I don’t know how to write HTML and am happy that I finally learned how to hard-code my no-follows. All I know about websites, blogging and troubleshooting technical issues comes from listening to others and trying it myself. (And breaking stuff on my blog. A lot.) Yes, this can be confusing and easier to ignore it (like I did with SEO for the first 6 years of my blog, argh), but we don’t have to. In all honesty, we can’t. If you’re reading this at all, you’re ahead of […]

Are you limiting the potential earnings of your website in ways you aren’t even aware of? If you don’t know the answer to that, we recommend conducting a self-audit of your Mediavine in-content ad settings. We’ve discussed these settings in the past, at length (the post linked to above, written by our CEO himself, is a terrific reference), but it never hurts to revisit the ways in which in-content settings work – and work for you. A periodic self-audit is always a good thing, and you may be surprised at what you find out along the way – not to mention what a significant difference can be made by what seem like very small changes. Before you begin, remember that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. You’ll need to consider your own site, goals and personal preferences so that you’re applying these recommendations as they pertain to […]

How long does it take for a publisher to complete Mediavine’s application process and begin running ads? We get this question a lot, and the answer isn’t as simple as a concrete number of days or weeks. The answer is … it depends.  Mediavine has one of the most comprehensive application processes in the industry, which is how we guarantee high-quality sites and the best ad inventory. Our CEO, Eric Hochberger, has written extensively about the key Mediavine requirements and why they matter. Here’s a quick recap of what Mediavine looks for in an application: How many sessions the website has Where its traffic comes from (Google, social, newsletters, direct, etc) Where traffic is originating from geographically The most popular posts/landing pages How long users view those posts The format of the posts The website layout Whether or not the traffic is consistent (or the […]

So, you want to jump on board the video train, but don’t know where to start? No worries. We’ve got you. First, let’s answer the most basic question:  What do you need, right now, to get started with Mediavine video? A website that is monetized with Mediavine ads That’s it.  Note that videos are nowhere on that one-item “list.”  That wasn’t a mistake, and we’ll explain why below. Slideshow video vs. Live action video There are two primary types of videos that publishers use to earn money with Mediavine ads: slideshow videos and live action videos. What is a slideshow video? Slideshow videos are videos created using still images, layered with text and music, and saved in a video format. They are faster and less expensive to produce, and if done correctly, they can look very professional and add value to your blog posts.  They […]

Some of the most common questions that we get in the support queue are questions regarding RPM changes. Since RPM isn’t a term that most people are familiar with outside of the ad realm, let’s take a moment to talk about just what RPM IS, anyway.

As a food blogger, my site was always super image-heavy. I use 3-4 photos per post in most instances, and they are all large.  The imagery is what made me fall in love with this business to begin with, so maintaining the quality of those images I worked so hard on is really important.  But…so is Google.  And while I loved my huge >1MB images, my website, and Google – did NOT. On my journey for great image compression, I went around a few corners.  My first stop was EWWW Image Optimizer. I really liked that tool, and how well it worked, but it didn’t quite make Google happy so I knew I needed something else. It is possible that this can be done with EWWW, but I didn’t dig into it before finding a recommendation in Autoptimize for Short Pixel.  I found Short Pixel […]

Use this quick and easy SEO checklist every time you write a post to make sure you are making the most of every pageview, every time. Use our ultimate easy SEO checklist to make search engine optimization easy and fast. SEO used to seem like some huge complicated beast, and since I didn’t understand it, couldn’t interpret it, and didn’t have money to hire an “expert”, I just ignored it. Big mistake. That meant my website that had hundreds of posts wasn’t getting any real traffic from search engines, and I was depending solely on social media for my traffic. Huge mistake. My #1 goal since coming to work at Mediavine last June and diving head-first into actionable, easy, SEO – has been to make google my #1 referral. I’m happy to report that finally became the norm on my little corner of the internets, […]

Today we are chatting with Mel Gunnell, of none other than Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. I’ve been a big fan for a long time of this blog in particular, and she was one of the sites that really inspired me to start a food blog of my own. She started blogging way back in the early days of this business, and you are going to love this insightful look into her blog and her life.  (If you’re like us and can’t get enough deliciousness from Mediavine publishers, check out our interviews with Dennis of Ask Chef Dennis and Nicole of Gluten-Free on a Shoestring.) Tell us a little bit about yourself, your family, and your everyday life. I’m a mom to five crazy kids (4 boys and little girl), as well as one dog, 12 chickens, and 4 cows. Having moved eight or so times throughout the […]
