3 Action Items That Will Get You Massive Traffic

Heya fellow bloggers! I’m Lena Gott, blogger at What Mommy Does and blog coach at Adventures in Blogging. I hope you’re doing well and not too weary from a summer traffic slump (if you experience this like I do every year). In case you missed it, I did a joint video interview (while you’re there, why not subscribe to the Mediavine YouTube channel?) with fellow MVP Stephanie Keeping of Spaceships and Laserbeams this month where we talked all things traffic. I highly recommend checking it out, as we tried to share some of our best tips for getting more traffic to our blogs. If we’ve met before, you know that I like to provide crazy specific advice on getting traffic. You won’t see generic advice here. I want you to be able to take these tips and get more traffic starting tomorrow. I’ll start out small with […]

common bookkeeping mistakes

At Mediavine, ads are just the beginning. Our mission is building sustainable businesses for content creators, and we’re committed to providing educational resources on all important topics for publishers throughout the industry. Like this post about bloggers seeking legal representation, this one about different planning tools to make your publishing life easier or this one about enhancing your writing skills. Today we’re happy to welcome guest author Amy Northard to the Mediavine blog. Amy is a CPA and the “Accountant For Creatives”, specializing in her work with creative small business owners. We invited her to share some basic bookkeeping mistakes that she’s frequently observed when working with influencers. Doing your own bookkeeping can be pretty tricky unless you have an accounting background or know someone who does, but that shouldn’t hold you back. I’m sharing the five most common bookkeeping mistakes I see when reviewing […]

improve your site speed and gpsi score

The following post was written by Peter Green, owner and CTO of Agathon, a company that specializes in building and hosting web applications. You can craft the most amazing post ever, but your audience reach will be crippled if your site loads slowly. That’s why we at Agathon offered site “health checks” as a perk to Mediavine publishers who attended the 2018 Mediavine Publisher’s Conference. We’ve now performed 100+ checks at the conference and over Google Meet before and after, and have seen that many sites suffer from the same pattern of fixable(!) problems. The great news is that Mediavine publishers scored much better than we usually see, but there was also room for improvement. Who doesn’t like improvement? Since we can’t do a site health assessment for everyone reading this post, let’s talk about the three most common problems so that you can ensure […]

There’s no question that working from home has advantages. We wear our pajama pants to virtual meetings, make our own hours and can do a load of laundry in the middle of the work day.  But if you’re anything like the Mediavine team, it can also come with a big challenge: SEPARATION of job (church) and home (state).  One of the best strategies we rely on to maintain sanity is organization, and for that, we’re fortunate to have specialist Sara Volk. She’s our Office Manager, aka project manager, keeper of the spreadsheets, birthdays, addresses, travel plans, meeting times and a million other things that we don’t even know about because she’s GOT them.  We’re so in awe of her strategies and skills that we asked her to put her best tips in one place, so we could pass them on to you guys.  Without further […]

Choosing a hosting company is an important decision for any website owner. There are tons of options out there, and it can definitely be daunting (even though many hosting companies would like you to think it is easy). WordPress is available to set up in almost any hosting plan, with almost any hosting company. Finding a company that “can” host a WordPress site is easy. But finding a company to host your site — and do it well — is much harder. Mediavine publisher and computer scientist Laurence Norah of the travel blog Finding The Universe volunteered to document his site migration from Blogger to WordPress, and we jumped at the opportunity to share this wealth of knowledge on our blog. In last week’s post, Laurence shared why he decided to make the move to a new blogging platform, WordPress. The next step for him was selecting a hosting […]

Choosing a blogging platform is one of the most fundamental decisions a publisher must make, which means switching platforms is a pretty big deal. So when Mediavine publisher/Computer Scientist Laurence Norah of the gorgeous travel blog Finding The Universe volunteered to document his site migration from Blogger to WordPress for us, we jumped at the opportunity to share this wealth of knowledge on our blog. This is part 1 of our 5-part blogger platform migration series, written as a collaboration between Laurence and the Mediavine Platform Engineering team.  Time to switch? Laurence: At the end of 2017, after nearly seven years of blogging on Google’s Blogger platform, I made the decision to migrate to WordPress. I was frustrated by how hard it was to customize my blog, the glacial nature of the Blogger team to implement essential features like https, and the general feeling that despite […]

We know that publishers everywhere are confused by GDPR and what it means for them, so we asked Jamie Lieberman of Hashtag Legal to break down GDPR in clear, straightforward fashion. NOTE: We’re currently working on a custom solution for Mediavine publishers that will allow for explicit consent (as Jamie discusses at length below) from European Union-based web visitors. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a moment to read Jamie’s post to learn more about what GDPR is and what these new regulations require of publishers. What is GDPR? The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union law taking effect May 25, 2018. The intent of GDPR is to give residents of the European Union greater control over how their personal information is collected, stored and used. Well, that sounds awesome. But I’m not located in […]

It’s spring cleaning time, and for bloggers, that means plugins! Plugin audits are a great opportunity for you to familiarize yourself with how your site works, make some hard decisions on what really matters to your readers, and clean up the junk that’s accumulated over the past year! We do them year-round at Once Coupled, so we have a bit of an edge when it comes to looking through plugin lists and quickly identifying which ones to keep, delete, replace, or consider further. Plus, we see all kinds of sites from all kinds of clients, so chances are pretty good we’ve come across the majority of your plugins at least once before! Let’s talk about some of the ways we identify where a plugin falls into the four categories mentioned above: you’ll get an peek into how Once Coupled performs plugin audits! Why perform a […]

affiliate marketing content that sells

This is a guest post brought to you by the folks at HumanProofDesigns. Affiliate marketing. If I were to leave that phrase there, would you feel enticed or bored? Curious or scared? Well the thing is, affiliate marketing can be a nightmare and a dream. A nightmare because it’s relatively easy to do it wrong and fail miserably (like I’ve done in the past) after investing serious effort and money building great content. A dream because, when done right, it can bring BIG bucks home in a passive way. And we both know passive income is sexy, very sexy. So if you’re interested in learning how to complement your display ad revenue with affiliate marketing, it’s your lucky day because the folks at Mediavine have graciously accepted me (Alejandro Meyerhans from HumanProofDesigns) as a guest on their blog to hit you with a value-packed, actionable […]
